The 6th edition of the Roxy Jam takes place at its home in Biarritz

Entirely free, the event drew 43,000 spec- tators in 2010. This year, the Roxy Jam Biarritz will be inspired by California, where 20 years ago the Roxy brand was first born.

ASP Women’s World Longboard Title

The Roxy Jam Biarritz has become a key stop in global surfing. The ASP Women’s World Longboard Championship was created at the initiative of Roxy and since then it is gathering the best female longboarders of the world.

The Californians Kassia Meador a glamorous icon of noseriding and double world champion Jennifer Smith, the sublime Kelia Moniz and the French virtuosos Coline Menard and Justine Dupont, both runner ups at the World Championships, will be putting it all on the line.

For the first time this year, the ASP Women’s World Longboard Title will be fought over two legs, with the first taking place in Biarritz during the Roxy Jam. For these top level athletes, the start of the ASP World Longboard Title circuit will open up a world of new challenges, and Roxy is excited about the prospects they offer for the future development of the sport.

Also, new for the 2011 edition of the ASP Women’s World Longboard Title in Biarritz : qualifiers are set to be held on July 13th, to find four wildcards who then go through to join the world’s top 28 women longboarders in the main event. And finally, alongside the competition, the surfers will be taking part in an original “disguised” expression session, consisting of three stages of pure fun and stylish surfing.

Besides the surf contest, Roxy brings back this year some free surf lessons for the public during the Roxy Jam Biarritz. Subscriptions can be done on the event’s site, Côte des Basques.

Ever since the Roxy Jam was created visitors can expe- rience an Art Festival of Boardculture showcasing the expressions from artistic and creative photographers, painters and sculptors, whose common denominator is their ties to surf culture.

This year, the art exhibition from the Roxy Jam is dedicated to California, the birthplace of surfing and will feature inspired Californians such as Kassia Meador… The charismatic longboarding is also an accomplished and stylish photographer. A hobby born from her numerous travels, photography fits her perfectly. To date, she has exhibited in Japan, New York City and many more, had a series of articles in prestigious FOAM magazine and is preparing a book with celebrated fashion photographer David Mushegain, with whom she also shot the Roxy spring summer 2011 campaign. Like Kassia, the Roxy girl Pandora Decoster will exhibit her portrait paintings of surfing icons and expose her numerous retro colored short films. The longboarder from Biarritz is known for her drawings and her artistic talents inherited from her grandfather a collector of art and surfing memorabilia. Further art and live art happenings from Jennifer Smith, Brandon Lomax and Colin Whitbread will take you through other aspects of a surfer’s life : exploring new territories and cultures, sustai- nable living, food awareness for a healthy body and soul…

Last but not least music is the essential ingredient of this surf art music festival. Over the course of time, the Roxy Jam Biarritz has forged a solid reputation on the European music scene, with a choice, groove and harmony that goes with the beach event vibe. In the past years, Neneh Cherry, The Do, Micky Green and the Plasticines pumped up the crowds.

This year, The Sounds will fire up the Port Vieux sands. Born in 1999 in Helsingborg, this quintet organised around the divine singer and guita- rist Maja Ivarsson plays energetic folk and electro sounds. After Living in America (2002), Dying to Say This To You (2006) and Crossing the Rubicon (2009), The Sounds will also play their new album: Something to Die For, due to be released March 2011. And as supporting act, the radiant duo Lilly Wood & The Prick will play live on July 16th on the para- dise beach setting of Port-Vieux. The folk/electro/pop duo was formed by Nili Hadida and Benjamin Cotto. A universe of soft melodies, poetic lyrics and a bewitching voice… Launching the night will be France’s rising young pop outfit, Pendentif, performing the first part of the concert with their melancholy pop, tinted with synthesizers and new wave colours.

It’ll be something of a homecoming for these sea-lovers – one of the hand, Michaël, is originally from Biarritz – as they take to the stage at the Port Vieux to kick off what promises to be a very special evening of great music on the sands.

Championnat du Monde de Longboard Féminin ASP

Depuis sa création en 2006 sur la mythique plage de la Côte des Basques où le surf a débarqué pour la première fois sur le continent en 1957, le Roxy Jam Biarritz est devenu un rendez-vous immanquable de la planète surf grâce au Championnat du Monde de Longboard Féminin ASP organisé pendant le festival.

Ainsi, le Roxy Jam Biarritz met en scène chaque année l’élite mondiale de cette discipline ancestrale et indé- modable pratiquée par des sirènes gracieuses et athlétiques.

Les Californiennes Kassia Meador, icône glamour du noseriding et la double Championne du Monde Jennifer Smith, la sublime Hawaiienne Kelia Moniz et les virtuoses françaises Coline Ménard et Justine Dupont, toutes deux vice-championnes du monde, seront en lice.

Pour la première fois cette année, le Championnat du Monde de Longboard créé à l’initiative de Roxy, se dis- putera sur deux manches dont la première demeure à Biarritz pendant le Roxy Jam. Un début de Tour Mondial ASP qui offre à ces sportives de haut niveau de nouvelles perspectives dont Roxy ne peut que se réjouir pour le développement du sport.

Autre nouveauté de l’édition 2011 du Championnat du Monde de Longboard à Biarritz : la mise en place de trials (qualifications) le 13 juillet pour désigner quatre wildcards qui rejoindront les 28 meilleures longboardeuses mondiales qualifiées. Enfin, en marge de la compétition, les surfeuses participeront à une expression session déguisée et décalée disputée en 3 manches pour un surf fun et stylé.

En parallèle de la compétition, Roxy organise cette année des initiations gratuites au surf pour le public. Les inscriptions s’effectueront sur le site du Roxy Jam Biarritz, Côte des Basques.

A la compétition de surf, Roxy a eu l’ingénieuse idée d’associer un festival d’art inspiré de la boardculture qui offre une scène et un cadre unique à l’expression artis- tique de créateurs, photographes, plasticiens, graffeurs, peintres dont le dénominateur commun est le lien avec la surf culture.

Cette année, l’expo d’art du Roxy Jam mettra à l’honneur des artistes californiens au premier rang desquels… Kassia Meador. En effet, la figure charismatique du longboard est aussi une photographe accomplie au style affirmé. D’un hobbie né de ses nombreux voyages, la photo est devenue une deuxième peau.
Aujourd’hui, elle expose au Japon, à NYC, vient de réaliser les images de la campagne Printemps/Eté de ROXY, une série pour le prestigieux magazine de photo FOAM et prépare un livre avec le célèbre photographe de mode David Mushegain. Comme Kassia, la Roxy girl Pandora Decoster exposera ses peintures et réalisera de petits films.

Il faut dire que la longboardeuse de Biarritz connue pour ses dessins cultive un gène artistique hérité de son grand-père collectionneur d’art et surfeur. A leurs côtés exposeront deux peintres made in Oceanside : Brandon Lomax et Colin Whitbread. Du live art est également au programme.

Qui dit festival, dit musique… Au fil du temps, le Roxy Jam Biarritz s’est forgé une solide réputation sur la scène musicale hexagonale et européenne avec une programmation de choix et un groove en harmonie avec la beach vibe de l’événement.

Cette année, c’est le fameux groupe suédois The Sounds qui jouera en live le 16 juillet au Roxy Jam. Né en 1999 à Helsingborg, ce quintet organisé autour de sa divine chanteuse et guitariste Maja Ivarsson cartonne avec son rock énergique aux accents folk et électro. Après Living in America (2002), Dying to Say This To You (2006) et Crossing the Rubicon (2009), The Sounds fera découvrir au Roxy Jam son nouvel album: Something to Die For, fin mars 2011.

En 2ème partie c’est le délicieux duo Lilly Wood & The Prick qui jouera en live sur la scène érigée dans l’enceinte paradisiaque du Port-Vieux qui, avant eux, a été foulée par The Do, Micky Green ou encore Plasticines.

Le duo folk/électro/pop formé par Nili Hadida et Benjamin Cotto est assurément une valeur montante de la scène française. Un univers onirique, des mélodies tendres, des textes poétiques servis par une voix envoutante à la teinte soul… Lilly Wood & The Prick, déjà remarqué par un célèbre parfumeur français, soulève l’enthousiasme général… à commencer par celui du public qui lui a décerné sa Victoire de la Musique cette année.

Enfin, le groupe Pendentif, une jeune formation pop française qui monte, assurera la première partie du concert dans un écrin pop sautillant et mélancolique, teinté de synthés et de couleurs new-waveuses… Pas étonnant de retrouver ces bordelais, amoureux de l’océan – Mickaël l’un des garçons du groupe est originaire de Biarritz – sur la scène du Port Vieux pour donner le la à cette soirée musicale sur la plage.
