32 Invitees Draw Their Heats at Rip Curl Cup Opening Ceremony

englishPadang Padang, Bali – An elite group of tuberiding specialists gathered at Padang Padang beach on Sunday for the opening ceremony of the 2011 Rip Curl Cup. They came from as far away as Hawaii, California, England and Brazil to draw their heats and find out who they will surf against in the opening round of competition.

Hundreds of spectators packed the beach to watch the presentation and press conference with the 32 invited surfers – 16 of Indonesia’s best and 16 of the world’s top tube riders. The opening ceremony marks the first day of the five-week event waiting period, and means that all 32 invited surfers are now on-call to be at Padang within 24 hours notice, if event directors decide to give the green light to run.

As always, the highlight of the evening was the traditional Balinese Kecak dance performance.

“The Kecak dance was unlike anything I’ve ever seen at a surf contest,” first-time invitee Chris Ward said. “It’s a cool showcase of the local culture and gets everyone fired up for the biggest contest of the year at one of the best waves in Bali.”

Contest organizers devised the heat drawing so that each four-man heat features two Indonesian surfers and two international surfers. Rip Curl has also left one final spot open in the contest for a Wild Card, to be announced later in the waiting period. Following is the official 2011 opening-round heat draw.

FrançaisPadang Padang, Bali –Un groupe d’élite des meilleurs tube riders mondiaux était rassemblé sur la plage de Padang Padang dimanche dernier pour la cérémonie d’ouverture de la Rip Curl Cup 2011. Ils sont venus d’Hawaï, de Californie, d’Angleterre ou du Brésil pour le tirage au sort du premier tour et découvrir les noms des compétiteurs qu’ils affronteront au lancement de la compétition.

Plusieurs centaines de spectateurs s’étaient amassés pour regarder la présentation des 16 surfeurs indonésiens et des 16 tube rider internationaux ayant reçus une invitation. La cérémonie d’ouverture marque le premier jour de la “waiting period” qui s’étend sur 5 semaines. Cela signifie également que les 32 compétiteurs devront désormais être prêt à se rendre sur Padang Padang dans un délai de 24 heures à partir du moment où les organisateurs annonceront le lancement des hostilités.

Comme toujours, le clou du spectacle fût la “Kecak Dance”, danse traditionelle balinaise.
“Je n’avais jamais vu quelque chose de comparable à la Kecak Dance lors d’une compétition de surf” a reconnu Chris Ward qui est invité pour la première fois. “C’est une belle représentation de la culture local qui motive tout le monde pour l’événement de l’année sur l’une des meilleures vagues de Bali.”

Chaque série du premier tour verra s’opposer 2 surfeurs indonésiens et 2 surfeurs internationaux. Rip Curl a également garder une invitation qui sera attribuée plus tard au cours de la “waiting period”. Voici le résultat du tirage au sort du premier tour de la Rip Curl Padang Padang Cup 2011:
